Sharp had a brief, but stellar career is race walking. Sharp started walking in November 1987 and by the next year finished 4th at the exhibition race at the 1988 Olympic Trials. Sharp's finish qualified her to compete in Gdansk that fall, the Pan Am Cup in Argentina. Sharp followed that performance with berths on the Barcelona World Cup team in 1989, Xalapa, Mex in 1990 at Pan Am Cup team, and the San Jose World Cup team in 1991.

Wendy also won the 1980 NAIA cross country, 1981 Indoor 2 mile and outdoor 5000m and marathon running for UW-Parkside. In 1986 she finished 8th in the USSA National 20 km cross country ski race and competed in the skiing Olympic Trials in 1988.
