Ben Shorey is one of America’s top young male race walkers. A product of good timing and hard work, he started race walking as a high school freshman when the Maine high school track and field program added the event.

After a slow start with a coach just learning the sport, Shorey accomplished a lot. He won the State High School Championships and the U.S. Junior Nationals twice. However, Shorey was not content with age-group victories alone. When he raced at the Penn Relays, he won not only the Junior division, but the Open division as well.

Shorey has continued to develop and now races amongst the best in the country. In 2003 he moved up in race distance to the 50K Nationals and finished 3 rd. Although he didn’t finish as high at the 2004 50K Olympic Trials, his 6 th place finish in 4:27:38 was a huge breakthrough. Shorey competes at the 2004 20K Olympic Trials later this year. With two solid 50Ks under his belt, he has the stamina to walk with America’s best.
