Nutrition After the Race
One last thing to think about before you warm down properly.  Post-race nutrition is similar to refueling after a difficult workout. After walking hard, you must refuel your body.  How quickly you refuel your body directly affects overall recovery time.  As soon as you finish, replace some of the calories you just expended by consuming a small amount of carbohydrates.  A carbohydrate/electrolyte drink provides a quick and easy way to get fuel back in your system.  A high-carbohydrate energy bar also offers a good source of nutrients to aid your recovery.

Shortly after race walking hard, consume a source of protein to help fuel the rebuilding of muscle.  Often after a hard workout, I like to eat a can of solid white tuna fish for this purpose.  Of course, hold the mayo!
