Yusuke Suzuki could not hold the pace and in between 10km and 15km the pack of Chen, Barrondo, and Ivanov dismissed him as an also walked.

As the 85 degree heat combined with a course with little shade the large packs broke into smaller groups and the leaders were followed by Spain's Miguel Ángel López, France's Bertrand Moulinet, Canada's Iñaki Gómez and Japan's Takumi Saito trying to hand on.
