2009 IAAF World Championships - 20km Women's Race Walk

Between 5K and 10K the race started to take shape. After the pack cruised through the first 5K in 23:18, the pace quickened considerably. How many times have coaches said to go out conservatively and then pick it up? It clearly seems like that's what the pros do.

Once the pace accelerated, the large pack scattered. Kaniskina took charge and started putting distance between her and the field. Plazter did all she could do to hold on, while everyone else jockeyed for position behind.

After just one lap Kaniskina is walking alone

Platzer is no stranger to 2nd after two Olympic silver medals and once again she falls into the spot number two
