Yamazaki controlled the pace through 5K, coming through in 22:11. Adams, a step or two behind, marched through a 22:13 with the rest of the lead pack (Nava Horacio, Jared Tallent, Trond Mymark, Yohan Diniz, Alex Schwazer, Sergey Kirdyapkin, and Denis Nizhergorodov) 10 seconds back.
