![]() Junior Women's 10K Race Walk The 10K Junior women’s race was probably the most exciting race of the weekend. It reminded me of the 1980’s East German team, working in synchronicity while devouring the field. For most of the race, the trio of Russians lead the way, walking in a tight pack. China’s Xue Chai followed closely, keeping them in striking distance. As the race progressed Xue Chai challenged the Russians and joined the pack. Four tough young women battled for the three medals. After a DQ the three continued, assured of a medal, but which place was anyone’s guess. On the last lap, Xue Chai received a caution and Vera Sokolva pulled ahead, followed closely by Alexandra Kudryashova. It was an excellent battle all the way to the line. The USA Junior Women fared comparably better than the Junior Men; the general level of athlete was visually more similar, and times relatively closer to the front of the race. Heather put it on the line early and was on pace for the World Junior standard through 8K but couldn't hold the stiff pace; still, the 51:25 is the fastest USA junior time ever in the event. No doubt the performance will improve her racing sense, as La Coruna was only her 2nd 10K ever, the first being the trials race. She's headed to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) next fall. Katie Hayes walked a steady race throughout with a creditable 52:54 while Le'erin Voss was caught up ahead of personal best pace early on, paid the anaerobic price, but still finished in 58:06. The World Cup experience is a world away from the USA Canada junior dual, and the experience will be helpful to all the Juniors' development. USA commentary provided by Steve Vaitones.
