Unfortunately, it wasn't long before the first member of the lead pack, Sean Albert fell off the pace. Meanwhile, Ben Shorey stuck to the top 4 favorites like glue. They all clocked 4K in 18:12, but the pace wouldn't stay so leisurely (OK, at least for them) for long.

I promised the race would get interesting and it does. Tim Seaman and Kevin Eastler were not content with the slow pace and dropped it. Distancing them self from the pack early it looked like they were making a statement.
